The Toronto Zoo

The Toronto Zoo is one of the largest zoos in Canada. As a national leader in saving wildlife, the zoo is working hard to ensure future generations have the same diversity of nature as we currently do.  The zoo is a great way to spend a day with the family, or even as an educational field trip from school. The zoo is located at 2000 Meadowvale Rd in Toronto and is accessible by either car or by TTC.

The Toronto Zoo offers over 10km of walking trails, where visitors can explore animals from all over the world. The zoo currently has over 5,000 animals representing over 450 species so no matter which animal you’re going for you’re likely to see so much more than you planned.

Discovery Zone

This area is specifically geared towards children, and interactive activities. This area has a kids zoo which is a dynamic wildlife experience where children can interact with animals including some feeding areas. Further the Discovery Zone offers a two acre water play area called Splash Island. This section of the zoo is a great area for the family to end the day after exploring and seeing all the animals the zoo has to offer.

Zoo Layout

At over 710 acres, the Toronto Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the world so there’s a whole lot to see while you’re here. The zoo is divided into seven regions: Africa, the Americas, Canadian Domain, the Tundra Trek, Eurasia, Australasia and Indo-Malaya. Depending on the region, and the animal, there are both indoor climate controlled pavilions and outdoor natural environments.

Behind the Scenes

Ever wanted to see how the animals are cared for? The Toronto Zoo offers you the option to explore the Wildlife Health Centre, a state-of-the-art area showcasing the work the zoo does in its animal hospital. You can view diagnostic imaging, treatments, surgeries, labs and even endocrinology labs. The facility has been designed to accommodate the needs of all the animals in the zoo.

Some Extra Information

Looking to get just a little more out of your visit to the zoo? Every day the zoo hosts Keeper Talks at various exhibits around the facility. During these talks, the keepers will give you informative information about the specific animal they’re taking care and you may even get to watch feeding time. These talks are there for you to ask questions, if you have them, and learn more about your favourite animals. Some animal talks are seasonal, so be sure to check the schedule!

The Toronto Zoo is a local attraction that exposes you and your family to animals from around the world. You can visit the arctic tundra, watch polar bears and then slide into a rainforest to witness gorillas in their natural habitat. You can visit gift shops and grab a bite to eat if you’re hungry. The zoo is a great option for all members of the family. If you are looking for a great family activity close to home, head on down to 2000 Meadowvale Road in Toronto and enjoy a full day of learning and adventure.
